The Big House, quite literally, is the largest stadium in the country and second largest in the world. There is an air of superiority when it comes to Michigan Football as they hold the record for most wins and highest winning percentage in college football. That feeling they project can no better be felt than when “Hail to the Victors” plays over the loudspeaker after a Michigan touchdown with 100k screaming maize and blue fans. Love them or hate them, this is college football at the highest of levels.
The Weekend
Travel: Ann Arbor sits about one hour west of Detroit and is an easy ride from the Detroit airport. Ann Arbor is a pretty walkable town so while it might be helpful, a rental car may not be necessary for the weekend.
Lodging: I suggest trying to stay as close to downtown Ann Arbor as you can. It’s a picturesque town with lots of bars, restaurants and shops. There is a Residence Inn on Huron Street, which runs right through the downtown.
Local Food: Zingermans Delicatessen cannot be missed. The line will be long, but worth the wait. A quintessential Jewish deli with excellent Pastrami, Corned Beef and Turkey Ruebens.
Local Drink: Head down to University Ave and you will find tons of watering holes to wet your appetite. A unique one: the Garage Bar sports an indoor/outdoor feel and is a great spot to start your night.
The Tailgate
Michigan has a mix of options for your pre-game. Boasting a great bar scene, the aforementioned downtown area is a solid place to start. The Greek Life at Michigan is also alive & well with many students hosting big pre-game parties walking distance from the stadium. Additionally, RV/tailgating lots are scattered around the campus. A company you could use if not familiar with the area is “Park n Party” – they reserve spots all over campus and take care of all the work so you can get to partying.
Unique Tradition
Michigan’s Go Blue banner hangs outside the tunnel where the players emerge before the game. “Go Blue – M Club Supports You” was created back in 1962 and made permanent by the graduate “M Club” and has become a staple for players to run under right before the game.
